Tanvir Hossain (WBNUJS, West Bengal)

Tanvir Hossain, from the small town of Berhampore in Murshidabad, West Bengal, is a 2nd year student at The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Kolkata. His journey to one of India’s premier law schools is a powerful reflection of resilience, ambition, and the enduring support of a humble yet determined family.

Tanvir was born into a lower middle class family. His father, a practicing lawyer, and his mother, a homemaker, worked tirelessly to provide for their children. Despite financial constraints, his father ensured that Tanvir received quality education, enrolling him in a private school until the 10th standard. Thereafter, Tanvir shifted to a government school and completed his higher secondary education in the commerce stream.

From an early age, Tanvir aspired to become an advocate at the Supreme Court of India. His interest in corporate law and his desire to make his parents proud became the driving forces behind his academic pursuit. While the path to a top National Law University seemed daunting given the family’s modest income, Tanvir remained undeterred.

He learned about the IDIA initiative through a friend and applied to become a trainee. Although he missed the formal application deadline, IDIA encouraged him to continue preparing for CLAT 2024 on his own and to reconnect if he gained admission to an NLU. Through intense self-study and persistence, Tanvir secured a seat at WBNUJS under the Other Backward Class A category of West Bengal.

Outside the academic world, Tanvir is passionate about sports, especially football. He played at the district league level and considers the sport an essential part of his identity. Although the rigors of law school have reduced his time on the field, his love for the game remains intact.

Tanvir has also started building his legal experience. In May 2025, he completed his first legal internship under Sr. State Advocate Momenur Rahman, Calcutta High Court,

Tanvir is now focused on excelling at NUJS and is hopeful for continued support from IDIA. With a vision to build a successful legal career and a strong sense of gratitude for his parents’ sacrifices, he is committed to making a meaningful contribution to society and giving back to the family that made his journey possible.
