Shailja Singh, a second-year B.A., LL.B. student at the National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi, is a young woman whose journey reflects resilience, determination, and a deep sense of purpose. Coming from a modest family sustained on a single income barely sufficient to cover basic needs, Shailja learned early in life the value of hard work and perseverance. Instead of being deterred by challenges, she transformed them into fuel for her ambition to shape a more equitable society.
Her academic path demonstrates discipline and adaptability. Having pursued Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in her higher secondary education, she secured commendable marks in her Class 12 exams.
Although her initial trajectory leaned toward science, her passion for justice steered her toward law. The dream of entering a National Law University (NLU), however, seemed distant until she was introduced to IDIA (Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access) by Abhinav Shukla, a senior IDIA scholar at NUSRL.
With IDIA’s mentorship and structured support, she prepared for CLAT and earned her place at NUSRL – an achievement that marked the realization of her long-cherished dream of becoming a lawyer.
At NUSRL, Shailja continues to demonstrate diligence in her studies. For her, law is not just a career path but a powerful tool to address systemic inequalities and empower marginalized communities. Her own lived experiences of adversity have strengthened her empathy and resolve to use legal knowledge as an instrument of social change.
Beyond academics, Shailja is a well-rounded individual with diverse interests. She finds comfort and expression through drawing, showcasing her creative side. A passionate sportsperson, she plays volleyball and badminton, both of which nurture qualities of teamwork, discipline, and determination that enrich her personal and academic journey.
Shailja’s story is not only one of individual perseverance but also of transforming personal struggles into sources of strength. With a solid foundation of academic excellence, the mentorship of IDIA, and her own unyielding commitment, she is steadily carving her place in the legal profession. Her journey stands as a testament to grit, vision, and the belief that justice should be accessible to all.
