Shinto Mathew Abraham
Shinto Mathew Abraham is a student at National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi. He is from Pathanamthitta district in Kerala. He lived the majority of his life overseas with his NRI parents. Throughout his school life, he was a talented speaker, debater, and elocutionist. Even in sports, he won accolades as a member of the school football team, and as vice-captain of the volleyball team. Shinto was also an able leader and was elected as the Head Boy of his school. He was awarded the ‘Best Outgoing Student of the Year’ upon his graduation.
However, as a result of the economic crisis in 2012, his father’s business suffered and his family was forced to leave the Gulf in the middle of the academic year when he was in the 12th standard. His family had to look to their friends and family in Kerala for financial support. Amidst all the unfortunate change in circumstances, and the emotional upheaval that comes with a loss of social standing, Shinto never gave up his hope of completing his education. A friend’s family supported him financially while he finished his schooling.
Shinto cracked CLAT in 2013 with an all India rank of 503 and landed a seat at NUALS, Kochi. He has been actively involved in organizing various programs in college. In his first year, he was a part of the Anti-Ragging Squad, and was subsequently elected to the Executive Council of the NUALS Students’ Council. In the second year, he was elected as the representative of his batch to the Executive Council of the NUALS Moot Court Society. In the third year, he was a part of the Anti-Ragging Committee and was elected Secretary of the Law & Society Forum, NUALS. He also coordinates the technical committee of NUALS.
Shinto has been consistently doing well in academics with a CGPA of 9 out of 10. He participated as a speaker in the 21st M.C. Chagla Memorial Moot Court Competition hosted by GLC, Mumbai, in September 2014. In 2015, he participated as a speaker in the 1st edition of the NUSRL Trial Advocacy Moot Court Competition at Ranchi. In 2016, he was the researcher of the NUALS team that participated in the Asia-Pacific Rounds of Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition at NLSIU, Bangalore.
Shinto has been exploring different subject matters of law in his internships. He did a litigation internship in civil law under Advocate Santhosh Mathew, and another in criminal law under Advocate S. Rajeev. He has done an editorial internship with The Hindu newspaper, as well as an internship at Trilegal, Mumbai in December 2015. He also did a maritime law internship in the chambers of George A. Rebello, under the guidance of Advocate Ashwin Shanker, in Mumbai.
Shinto is a part of the college volleyball team, and also plays football. He has been a member of the IDIA Kerala Chapter since 2013, and helps out with sensitization activities. Shinto has his eyes set on a career in civil service, and he believes studying law will bring him closer to this goal. In 2017, Shinto was elected as the Student Body President of NUALS.
