Born and brought up in Bengaluru, Karnataka, Janani’s journey is one of determination, perseverance, and hope. Raised in a modest household, she grew up understanding the value of hard work and the transformative power of education. Her father earns a livelihood as an auto-rickshaw driver, while her mother works as a domestic helper. Together, they support a family of six, striving to provide their children with opportunities they themselves never had.
As the eldest of four siblings, Janani has always been conscious of the responsibilities that come with her circumstances. Her younger siblings are currently pursuing their education, and despite the family’s limited and uncertain income, her parents have consistently prioritised their children’s education, making immense sacrifices to ensure they could continue studying.
Janani completed her schooling at Excellent English School, where she emerged as the school topper, securing 94.4% in the SSLC examination. She then joined NMKRV Pre-University College, where she pursued the Science stream with PCMB. During this time, she developed a keen interest in law, recognising its potential as a powerful tool to address inequality, protect the rights of vulnerable communities, and bring about meaningful social change.
Motivated by this vision, Janani began preparing for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). Although she was unable to secure admission to a National Law University, she remained steadfast in her ambition of pursuing a legal education. Rather than allowing the setback to discourage her, she continued working towards her goal with resilience and determination despite the financial challenges faced by her family.
Her perseverance was rewarded when she secured admission to the B.A. LL.B. programme at Christ (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru. While this achievement marks an important milestone in her academic journey, the challenges of pursuing legal education continue to test her family’s resilience.
As an IDIA Scholar, Janani has found a supportive community that has strengthened her journey through mentorship, guidance, academic assistance, and constant encouragement. Being a part of IDIA has reaffirmed her belief that talent and determination deserve every opportunity to flourish.
Janani’s journey is a testament to resilience, hard work, and the power of opportunity. As an aspiring first-generation lawyer, she hopes to use her legal education to advocate for justice, empower marginalised communities, and create opportunities for those facing circumstances similar to her own. She believes that the law is not merely a profession but a means of building a more just and inclusive society.
