Bishika graduated from Sikkim Government Law College, Burtuk, Gangtok with a strong belief that the law is a powerful instrument for promoting justice and social change. Her decision to pursue law was inspired by her desire to help poor and marginalized individuals who are unable to access legal assistance or are unaware of their rights. As a woman from a Scheduled Tribe community, she also viewed legal education as a means of becoming independent, resilient, and a positive role model within her community.
During her time in law college internship programme, Bishika gained practical exposure by attending court proceedings, assisting in legal drafting, conducting legal research, and observing senior advocates. These experiences helped her develop a deeper understanding of the justice system while strengthening her analytical, drafting, and case preparation skills.
Like many first-generation legal professionals, her journey was marked by academic, personal, and financial challenges. Despite these obstacles, she remained committed to her studies and successfully completed her legal education. These experiences strengthened her resilience and reinforced her belief that perseverance and dedication are essential to the legal profession.
Her interest in the IDIA Litigation Fellowship stems from its commitment to promoting access to justice and nurturing young lawyers dedicated to public service. She sees the fellowship as an opportunity to learn from experienced legal professionals and further develop her practical skills in legal research, drafting, advocacy, and litigation.
Through the fellowship, she hopes to contribute with sincerity, integrity, and a strong willingness to learn. She aims to develop her legal research, drafting, case preparation, and other initiatives that improve access to justice, while gaining a deeper understanding of how the law can be used to address real social challenges.
Her long-term vision is to build a legal career founded on compassion, integrity, and service. She aspires to become an advocate who ensures that quality legal assistance is accessible to poor and marginalized communities, using the law as a means to protect rights, promote equality, and create meaningful social change.
