Govind Manger is a law graduate from Sikkim Government Law College, Gangtok, Sikkim. His decision to pursue law was deeply influenced by personal experiences during his childhood, particularly witnessing domestic violence against his mother, his parents’ separation, and the hardships caused by a lack of awareness about legal rights. These experiences instilled in him a strong desire to understand the law, protect vulnerable individuals, and ensure that others do not suffer due to limited access to legal knowledge.
As he grew older, his motivation expanded beyond his personal circumstances. Living in a rural community, he observed that many people were unable to access justice because they lacked legal awareness and guidance. During his final year of law college, the commencement of a hydropower project in his area led to several legal concerns for local residents. Although he had no formal responsibility, he voluntarily guided community members, explained their legal rights, and engaged with project authorities on their behalf. This experience reinforced his commitment to using the law as a means of serving society.
His academic and professional journey was shaped by active participation in moot court competitions, internships, and training under senior advocates, which strengthened his legal research, drafting, and advocacy skills. He also accompanied a Legal Aid advocate during community visits, gaining first-hand exposure to legal aid services, and worked to create awareness about society registration and other legal issues affecting his village. These experiences enhanced both his practical understanding of the law and his commitment to public service.
Govind’s journey was marked by emotional, financial, and personal challenges arising from growing up in a broken family. Balancing academic responsibilities with family and community commitments required perseverance and resilience. Rather than allowing these hardships to define him, he used them as motivation to pursue legal education and dedicate himself to promoting justice and supporting those in need.
Through the IDIA Litigation Fellowship, he hopes to strengthen his litigation skills, particularly in advocacy, client counselling, communication, and practical legal problem-solving. He also looks forward to learning from experienced mentors while contributing his grassroots perspective on the legal challenges faced by rural and underserved communities.
In the long term, Govind envisions building a legal career founded on integrity, compassion, and public service. He aims to promote legal awareness, expand access to justice for marginalized communities, contribute to legal aid initiatives, and mentor aspiring law students from rural backgrounds, ensuring that the knowledge and opportunities he gains are shared with others.
