Nitya Sharma is a law graduate from Sikkim Government Law College, Burtuk, Gangtok, Sikkim. Her decision to pursue law was driven by the belief that law is not merely a profession but also a powerful tool for empowering individuals and understanding society. Growing up in a rural area, she observed that many people were unaware of their legal rights or hesitant to approach legal institutions for assistance. These experiences motivated her to pursue legal education with the aim of contributing towards greater access to justice.
During law college, Nitya developed a broader understanding of the legal profession and realized that the study of law extends far beyond statutes and legal provisions. She came to appreciate that effective legal practice requires critical thinking, empathy, and a deep understanding of the social realities that influence people’s lives. This perspective strengthened her commitment to using the law as a means of serving society.
Her academic journey was shaped by active participation in legal research, moot court competitions, and other co-curricular activities, all of which enhanced her research, analytical, communication, and advocacy skills. Exposure to legal aid programmes further reinforced her belief that combining legal knowledge with compassion and public service can bring meaningful change and improve access to justice for vulnerable communities.
Throughout her legal education, she came to view the study of law as a lifelong commitment to continuous learning, personal growth, and service. Her experiences have instilled in her a strong sense of professional responsibility and a desire to contribute positively to the legal profession while working towards a more just and equitable society.
Through the IDIA Litigation Fellowship, Nitya hopes to strengthen her practical understanding of litigation by developing her skills in legal drafting, case handling, legal research, advocacy, and problem-solving. She also looks forward to learning from experienced mentors and gaining practical exposure to the realities of legal practice while contributing to initiatives that improve legal support systems for vulnerable communities.
In the long term, Nitya aspires to become a competent, compassionate, and ethically responsible advocate who uses the law as an instrument of social change. She hopes to contribute towards improving access to justice, supporting marginalized communities, and building a legal career founded on integrity, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to public service.
