Sohitya is a law graduate from Sikkim Government Law College, Lower Burtuk, Gangtok. Growing up in Tingchim, Mangan, a rural area of Sikkim, she had limited exposure to the legal profession and initially believed that pursuing law was beyond the reach of an underprivileged student. Although she had always aspired to become an advocate, it was the encouragement and unwavering support of her school principal and family that gave her the confidence to pursue legal education. After joining law college and interacting with practicing advocates in Gangtok, she realized that her goal was not merely to become a lawyer but to excel in the profession and use the law as a means of serving society.
During her academic journey, Sohitya actively participated in college competitions and was elected as the first female President of her college, experiences that strengthened her confidence, leadership, and communication skills. Looking back at her roots and the expectations of her family and community continues to motivate her to work hard and strive for excellence. Observing advocates from diverse backgrounds succeed in litigation further reinforced her determination to remain committed to the profession and build a meaningful legal career.
Her journey has also been marked by several personal and professional challenges. Completing her legal education despite financial constraints, balancing the responsibilities of being the eldest daughter with the demands of litigation, overcoming self-doubt, and learning effective time management have all contributed to her growth. Rather than allowing these challenges to discourage her, she views them as experiences that strengthened her resilience, confidence, and commitment to the legal profession.
Through the IDIA Litigation Fellowship, Sohitya hopes to strengthen her advocacy, communication, public speaking, and critical thinking skills while gaining practical exposure to litigation under the guidance of experienced mentors. She also aims to contribute to legal aid and pro bono initiatives, particularly for women, children, rural communities, environmental causes, and animal welfare.
In the long term, she envisions using her legal knowledge to promote social change, expand access to justice, and mentor aspiring law students from underprivileged backgrounds, encouraging them to overcome their own challenges and pursue careers in law.
