Samsul Laskar hails from Basanti, a small region situated in the Sundarbans, West Bengal. His father works as a wage labourer and does various small jobs, as and when they come his way. His mother is a homemaker and his elder brother works as a house painter, and they collectively are able to earn a sum of Rs. 8000 to 10000 in a month. However, the nature of their work does not guarantee a fixed and stable income, which leads to severe hardships during certain periods of the year. This situation exacerbated during the pandemic.
Samsul had his schooling in the vernacular medium and scored 73% in the West Bengal Board’s Intermediate Examinations. Growing up, he had no exposure to the field of law, and the thought of law as a career option never crossed his mind. However, a family relative, who was an IDIA Scholar motivated him to pursue this field.
Samsul took great hardships to prepare for Bank Clerk examinations. The only coaching institute required him to travel for 4-5 hours, and financial constraints stopped him from fulfilling his aim. After coming in contact with IDIA, Samsul started preparing for his CLAT examination, but was severely disadvantaged due to his vernacular education and lack of access to a coaching centre in his region.
Samsul relied on self-study to clear the Calcutta University examination and took admission in Jogesh Chandra Chaudhury Law College in 2019 for studying law.
Samsul is extremely inquisitive and keeps himself occupied with novels, books and news. He takes a deep interest in the issues prevailing in the country and elsewhere and likes to learn about historical events. In his leisure time, he finds joy in playing cricket and football.
