Ishita hails from Hetampur, a small village in the Birbhum district of West Bengal. Ishita’s journey is marked by quiet strength, perseverance, and a deep commitment to social justice.
Her father works at an agricultural bank and her mother is a para teacher. Despite their modest incomes and the financial constraints they faced, Ishita remained steadfast in her pursuit of education. She completed her secondary education at DAV Public School, Dubrajpur, and her higher secondary schooling at BKTPP Prabir Sengupta Vidyalaya in Kochujore, Siuri. After her 12th board exams in 2023, she set her sights on the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), a goal she pursued through self study, unable to afford formal coaching. Against all odds, she secured a commendable rank and earned admission into NUJS.
Ishita’s passion for law was sparked at a young age, particularly by the 2012 Nirbhaya case. Witnessing the slow judicial process and the struggle for justice left a lasting impact on her. She resolved to be a voice for the marginalized and those denied justice. Her dream is to one day start an NGO that provides legal assistance to people who cannot afford it, extending her vision of access to justice for all.
When she learned about the high fees at National Law Universities, Ishita feared her dream would be beyond reach. But just when she needed support the most, her friend Sumaiya, a fellow NUJS student and IDIA scholar, introduced her to the IDIA program. With IDIA’s help, Ishita was able to continue her education at NUJS, something she remains deeply grateful for.
Outside the classroom, Ishita is a gifted artist. She loves painting and creating pencil sketches and also finds joy in writing and reading. These creative pursuits allow her to explore and express herself, offering a source of strength and reflection.
Currently in her 2nd year at WBNUJS, Ishita has already begun gaining practical experience. In May 2025, she completed an internship under Shrabanti Chatterjee at the Birbhum District Judges’ Court at Suri, West Bengal and in June 2025 she interned under Advocate Amaresh Bag, Calcutta High Court, which gave her valuable exposure to the workings of legal practice.
Ishita’s story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through resilience, community support, and an unshakable belief in one’s purpose. With the support of IDIA, she is building a future where she can use the law to uplift others and transform lives.
