Riya Malakar, a first-year B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) student at National Law University, Jodhpur, hails from Agartala, Tripura. Raised as an only child in a home rooted in sincerity, discipline, and resilience, Riya’s journey reflects the quiet strength of a family that believed in the power of education.
Her academic journey began at Shishu Bihar Higher Secondary School, Agartala, followed by her high schooling in Delhi—experiences that shaped her strong academic foundation and broadened her outlook.
Known for her consistent excellence in studies and co-curriculars, she often took the lead in hosting school events with grace and confidence.
Riya’s path was not without hardship. The gradual withdrawal of emotional and financial support from her father left the family in a fragile situation. Her mother, who had earlier left her career as an insurance advisor due to familial pressure, became the family’s sole support system. She stepped up without complaint, becoming both caregiver and provider. Alongside, Riya’s grandmother, a retired government employee, stood as a pillar of encouragement and strength.
These life experiences taught Riya some of her most profound lessons— resilience, dignity, and courage. When financial hurdles threatened her dream of becoming a lawyer, she sought out opportunities that valued both merit and need. That’s when she discovered IDIA.
Riya calls IDIA a beacon of hope that appeared in a moment of darkness. With IDIA’s mentorship and financial support, she was able to pursue her legal education at NLU Jodhpur. She is deeply grateful to the IDIA team for believing in her potential and walking alongside her on this journey.
Beyond academics, Riya is formally trained in music and fine arts— creative pursuits that have helped shape her sensitivity and perspective. Her childhood afternoons were often spent immersed in the works of Tagore, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, and Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, nurturing a love for literature that she still expresses through poetry and short stories.
She aspires to be not just a skilled legal professional but a changemaker who contributes meaningfully to society. Her story is a reminder that when you walk with integrity and purpose, support finds its way to you even from the most unexpected corners.
