Sujal Garhewal, hailing from Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh, embodies grit, perseverance, and the belief that education can transform lives. Coming from a modest background, with his father working as a delivery person in a computer shop and his mother as a homemaker, Sujal never allowed financial constraints to limit his dreams.
He completed his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Raipur, where he consistently excelled despite limited resources. After his Class 12 exams, Sujal set his sights on cracking the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), one of India’s most competitive exams.
Without access to expensive coaching, he relied on free online resources, borrowed books, and peer study groups. Through self- discipline and determination, he secured an impressive rank and earned admission to Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU), Raipur.
Sujal’s passion for law was ignited during his teenage years after reading about cases of social injustice and inequality. Deeply affected by stories of people denied justice due to poverty and lack of awareness, he resolved to use law as a tool to serve the voiceless.
Initially disheartened by the high cost of legal education, Sujal considered preparing for central universities instead. However, his path changed when he learned about IDIA from his mentor, Mr. Tushant Sharma. With IDIA’s support – financial aid, mentorship, and guidance Sujal could pursue his dream of studying law at an NLU.
His aspiration is to work in the field of human rights and legal empowerment, with a long-term vision of establishing a legal aid center to help marginalized communities access justice. For Sujal, law is more than a career; it is a means to create meaningful change. During his first semester break, Sujal interned at Chhattisgarh Human Rights Commission.
Sujal’s journey is a powerful example of resilience and the transformative impact of opportunities. With his unyielding spirit and IDIA’s support, he is well on his way to becoming a changemaker in India’s legal landscape.
