IDIA Signs a MOU with CAN Foundation for Supporting IDIA Scholars under Project Dhanajay

IDIA Charitable Trust and Confederation of Alumni for National Law Universities (CAN Foundation or CAN) have tied-up through a Memorandum of Understanding (‘MoU’), in regard to one of CAN’s flagship projects, ‘Dhananjay’.

The objective of the tie-up is to assist the financially underprivileged legal aspirants recommended by IDIA in pursuing a career in litigation. The assistance shall be provided through Project Dhananjay being carried out by CAN. CAN Foundation will provide financial assistance to 3 IDIA Scholars recommended by IDIA (who may be graduates, or students pursuing their final year) by paying a monthly stipend ranging from INR 15,000 to INR 18,000. CAN will give preference to the recommended IDIA Scholars against 3 out of 5-6 slots under Project Dhananjay 2021. For this year, the support shall be extended for 10 months, from July 2021 to May 2022 to IDIA Scholars have graudated or studying in their final year and will graduate in 2021.

Project Dhananjay is an initiative wherein CAN wishes to encourage fresh graduates to join litigation right at the threshold of their professional lives. It aims at aims at facilitating meritorious law graduates in need of economic assistance who are driven by a passion to serve the society by serving as the harbingers of justice and pursuing a career in litigation. The new entrants face many hardships in entering litigations varying from financial struggles to connections within the profession. The Project provides sustanance allowance for the intial one to two years to ease the hardships faced in the early stages of the career of practising in the courts of law. This will provide an ‘incubatory support’ to these meritorius budding NLU graduates from economically weaker families who demonstrate potential to raise the standards of litigation in multiple ways.

Sharing his vision on the tie-up, Shishira Rudrappa (Managing Trustee, IDIA) stated that the objectives of CAN and IDIA will translate into reality through this MoU, which will prove instrumental in benefitting the young and dynamic minds, and enable them to chase their dreams, unscathed by financial hurdles. IDIA & CAN can collaborate on multiple fronts to multiply the effect of their efforts for their beneficiary students.

Siddharth R. Gupta (CEO, CAN Foundation) stated that this mutual effort between both the organisations is metaphoric to planting a sapling which is expected to grow into a gigantic tree in the years to come. CAN seeks to continue this project for decades, thus aiming to build prospective Senior Counsels at the Bar and Judges adorning the Bench, who shall ensure that the arm of justice efficiently reaches those who cannot afford it.
